Your husband wants to help you, but most likely he doesn’t know how to do that effectively. He wants to be that support without being responsible for making sure he is doing it right. He will need breaks, and when things get tough, he may not be able to help you stick to your birth plan. A doula does not take the place of your husband in support, they come alongside and teach and help him support you. If two hands are good, 4 hands are invaluable when it comes to comfort. A doula is another woman focused on helping you and it will help boost his confidence that he has been effectively comforting you.
Most nurses are amazing, but their main responsibility is to provide medical care. Nurses have numerous other responsibilities so during a typical labor a nurse will come in the room once every hour to put you on a monitor for 20 minutes and ask if you need anything, and then leave. 20 minutes later the nurse will come back in to disconnect the monitor and again ask you if you need anything. The nurse will not typically be in the room continuously until you are close to the stage of pushing. A doulas primary responsibility is to provide comfort by continuous care throughout the labor and delivery. Most Dr. and nurses like having a doula at the birth because the care that we provide helps make their job flow more smoothly. We do not work against the staff, we work as a compliment to them, but are working for the client not the hospital.
A mother who is having an epidural needs just as much support as a natural birth. When having an epidural a mother needs to be moved every 45 to 60 minutes. There are positions that a doula can help put you in that will encourage progress. Typically you cannot feel much from your waist down, and will need greater coaching during pushing. It also provides the support for both you and dad.
I do not believe that every woman needs a doula, but I do believe that every woman needs to know that she has the option of having a doula. I think one of the toughest things right now is bringing the awareness of doulas, what we do, and how we can help, and the value of our service.
Yes, I offer evidence based ICEA Childbirth Educations Classes. I know that the hospital offers classes, but the classes I offer are more in-depth in order to help you during pregnancy, and prepare you for a more natural labor and delivery. We also cover breastfeeding and the new parent stage. My classes are set in a more intimate setting, and have the flexibility to set a schedule that works for you. I offer a discount for class and doula services together.
In the communities of Rapid City, Spearfish and Gillette you have birthing options, and choices, you can exercise your right to choose a provider that you are comfortable with. A provider that represents the birth that you are looking to experience, If you have chosen a provider and find that you no longer have in voice on your care, make another choice. Choose another provider. Talk openly with your provider, so that you clearly agree on the care that will be provided. Note: sometimes things do not go as planned because mom and baby have unforeseen needs, in that situation mom and baby's health is most important, and you need to allow the provider to do what is best for you both.
Your support person could be your Husband, Boyfriend, Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt, Friend or neighbor. Again you have choices, a couple things to consider are 1.) why am I asking this person to be involved, and 2.) will this person help to create the environment that I want to birth in. Make sure that whoever will be there will help you stay calm, not add to the stress and pressure. It is ok to say no.
Hire a birth doula. I frequently hear that someone does not need a birth doula because they already have a pregnancy support person, and there are also nurses at the hospital to help. It may surprise you but hospital staff does not stay with you during the labor process. Most likely your other support person is great but does not know how best to comfort you in labor. Your doula will support you while guiding and teaching them through your labor and delivery journey. Just like all providers are not the same, not all doulas are the same, and not all cover the same locations. If you are delivering and want a doula in Rapid City give me a call. If you are looking for a Birth Doula in Spearfish, I would be thrilled to visit. Even if you need a birth doula in Gillette, I enjoy supporting families in Wyoming.
