Ina May Gaskin
We provide 1 to 2 visits with you before your baby arrives. We will discuss the scope of Pregnancy Care and Birth Doula doula services and develop a plan on how to handle pain management. We will practice labor and birth positions and discuss how best to work together as a birth team with your provider.
When your labor begins you and your doula will decide when and where it is best for her to join you, at home or at the hospital. Your doula will provide continuous support for you and your husband/support person during labor and delivery. In the case of a c-section she will support your husband/support person and the baby until you are out of recovery. After the baby is born she remain with you until breastfeeding is established and you are comfortable with her leaving. This is usually 1 to 3 hours.
We provide 1 to 2 postpartum visits to make sure that feeding is going well, and that mom and baby are doing well. We also provide lactation support at this time. This is a great time to talk about your birth experience and answer any questions that you may have.

Benefits of Water birth
Research shows using water in childbirth has great benefits. It provides natural comfort and helps in relaxation in a time that can be hard to relax. Many Midwives encourage the use of birth pools in labor. Some hospitals have birthing pools, however in the Northern Black Hills area, home birth is the only water birth option. Reserve your birth pool well in advance of your due date as there is limited pool availability. Warm water has been called the "Liquid Epidural"
